Kauai Maps - a Few Notes (from 2006)
A very nice PDF map of Kauai with good detail for a small map can be found here. I had a hard time finding good hiking and trail maps of Kauai to purchase on the Web. Most Websites that I found during my map search advise you to visit the Koke'e Museum and Lodge to get maps, which is what I ended up doing. They have a wonderful little store, and I was happy to give them my business, but I would have preferred to get my maps in advance. A very good one I purchased there is the Earthwalk Press Northwestern Kaua'i Recreation Map. The topographic details are good, although some of the other linework is a bit crude. I also picked up a map of Kauai produced for the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources by Manoa Mapworks. It has topographic shading (in addition to the contour lines) that is both beautiful and detailed. Hiking trails are shown. Unfortunately, however, the overlay of various"game management" and hunting zones obscures some of the details, making it a little hard to use for hiking. I didn't have any luck finding it for sale online. The DLNR Website has a"Hiking?" link to this Website, which offers the following advice:
- "If you would like to obtain a map of the hiking trails on Kauai, you can write or call the Division of Forestry and Wildlife on Kauai at (808) 274-3433."
- And "Hiking maps are available either on the web [?!] or at our DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife Honolulu office (1151 Punchbowl St., Rm. 325, Honolulu, HI 96813). We can send them upon request or you can pick them up in person."
- And finally "KAUA`I MAP - Free/send 10-1/2 by 12-1/2 self-addressed envelope with $1 postage to Division of Forestry and Wildlife Kauai District Office, 3080 Eiwa St., Room 306, Lihu`e, Hawai`i 96766.
Any of which may or may not get you the Manoa Mapworks map. If none of those options pan out, a call directly to Manoa might be the way to go. (A version of the Manoa Mapworks map without the hunting zones would be the perfect hiking map!) Or just wait 'till you're at Koke'e and get it at the Museum!
